The Rails to Trails works nationally to convert unused
rail lines to recreational trails.
The Appalachian Trail is the nation’s premier foot trail, and its most
beautiful (and some of its most challenging) sections are right here
along the Tennessee/North Carolina border.
For the past 30 years, the American Hiking Society has worked vigorously
on behalf of the nation’s trails and all the hikers who enjoy them. As a
recreation-based non-profit organization, American Hiking Society champions
conservation issues, builds partnerships between public and private stakeholders,
and provides critical resources to plan, fund and develop foot trails.

American Trails works to create a national network of interconnected
trails for a wide variety of uses. Many, many useful links.
Johnson County Trail Association
Trails extend all over these hills, not only in Johnson County, but also
in our neighboring counties and states. We’re connecting up with other
trails and trail systems. The JCTA has a long range plan which includes
as a primary objective the development of an 87-mile multi-use trail network.

Back Country Horsemen of East Tennessee
Back Country Horsemen work to preserve wise, responsible, common-sense access to
public lands for horsemen by assisting the various government and private agencies in

Kingsport Greenbelt

The Kingsport Greenbelt is a linear park that connects residential neighborhoods, traditional
parks, downtown, commercial districts, schools and activity centers. A special feature of this
unique park is a pathway for pedestrian and bicycle use. The pathway meanders through marshlands,
glides across open meadows, and passes by sites of historical and aesthetic value.
Elizabethton/Carter County Tourism Association

Much of the Tweetsie Trail would pass through Elizabethton and Carter
County, which is rich in history and scenic beauty. Come visit its friendly
people, the “beginning of the end of the Revolutionary War”,a trophy
trout stream, great outdoor activities of all sorts, and the world’s largest
natural rhododendron garden on one of the Southeast’s highest mountains.

Friends of Roan Mountain

Friends of Roan Mountain foster greater awareness and understanding of
the natural, historical, and cultural significance of Roan Mountain.
Members support the organization’s interpretive and educational
programs and activities which are designed to accommodate a wide
range of interests.

By advocating for safety, facilities and increased government and public
relations, Bike Walk Tennessee will promote cycling and walking in
Tennessee for the benefit of health, recreation, tourism and a cleaner
environment for all.
Spearhead Trails Initiative

The Southwest Virginia multi-use trail project includes the
counties of Buchanan, Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Tazewell and
Wise as well as the City of Norton – an initiative by the Southwest
Regional Recreation Authority (SRRA).
